Volanis

France

Volanis (Design Volanis S.A.) was the Paris-based automobile design studio founded by Greek designer Antonis Volanis (also known as Antoine Volanis, born in Thessaloniki). Volanis had gained considerable experience designing iconic models for French automakers—including the Matra Bagheera, Rancho, Murena, and the Renault Espace—before establishing his own bureau in France in November 1980.

In 1983, Volanis introduced the Helios, a streamlined fastback (FHC) concept exhibited in Geneva and Paris that emphasized futuristic styling and aerodynamic efficiency; it measured approximately 3.94 m long, 1.75 m wide, and 1.50 m tall.

The following year, at the 1984 Paris Motor Show, he presented the Apollon, a sleek saloon concept built atop the mechanical platform of a Renault 11 Turbo. The Apollon boasted a remarkably low drag coefficient of just 0.13 and featured a 1,397 cc turbocharged engine rated at about 105 hp and 162 Nm of torque.

Volanis’s concepts reflected his progressive outlook on automotive form, integrating sculptural minimalism with functional aerodynamics. Though neither design entered production, the Helios and Apollon remain notable as experimental visions of what French automotive design could have looked like in the mid-1980s: forward-thinking, efficient, and stylish.
